NC AHEC Classroom Programs
Health Career Programming is aimed to help students:
- Learn about opportunities for a career in health care
- Stimulate interest in a health career
- Providing further health career exploration experiences
Guidelines for setting up programs
- Programs can be created or customized.
- (Virtual Presentations are available for some health careers).
- Some programs may require a fee for materials/certification and/or pre-planning for ordering supplies
- Most of these programs usually take one class period to complete. Some may be longer and shorter programs can be combined if necessary.
Health Career Overview
This presentation is for students who are interested in a health career but unsure of a specific path. It details the steps to take in high school and during college. Information is provided about required tests and when to take them. An overview is given on medical careers, years of school required and average salaries.
Autopsy
Students will watch an actual autopsy on video and learn about the role of a medical examiner. The video, produced by the LA county coroner's office, shows a complete autopsy to determine the cause of death. Students are required to get a signed release from parents before viewing.
Laparoscopic Surgery Demo
This demonstration includes a video of an actual laparoscopic surgery. Following the video students get to practice their skills using the same instruments to complete seemingly simple tasks.
Injections
Students will learn about giving injections. They will practice techniques and learn about locations for giving injections. They will be injecting citrus fruit...not each other.
Sutures
Students will learn about sutures (stitches). They will practice a simple technique using instruments...again, not on each other, but on foam pads.
First Aid/CPR
Students can learn basic First Aid. Topics include taking vital signs, Heimlich maneuver, splinting, bandaging, and CPR. Classes for CPR can be informational or can result in actual certification*. There is a $5.00 per student CPR Certification fee.
Forensics
Students will explore concepts in forensics science including odontology, anthropology, entomology, and pathology. Using these skills, students will determine which missing body they have found based on the applied sciences. Option to include dental with permission slip
Exploring Epidemiology
Students learn about the field of Epidemiology through hands on and presentation activities. With the use of iPad applications students can explore the various aspects of epidemiology and its function in the health care system.
Dissection/Cardiology
Students will be guided through a dissection of pig hearts. Pigs and humans have very similar anatomy in this organ. Students will see all the chambers and blood vessels associated with the cardiac muscle. The class also explores the anatomy & physiology of the heart and understanding an EKG.
Blood Typing
Students will actually test their own blood to determine their blood type. This program requires a signed permission form and students who are mature enough to deal with bio-hazards properly.
Karyotyping
Students will learn about chromosomes and chromosomal disorders by completing a karyotype. Then students will learn about common variations found and what those disorders look like.
Nutrition
The basics of nutrition will introduce students to the field and let them see just how much fat/sugar can be found in some of their favorite foods. Information on the “my plate” nutrition plans and daily needs is also provided.
Pharmacy
Students will learn how to read and fill prescriptions as well as how to perform simple drug calculations and create smartie pills.
Dentistry
Students will be introduced to a variety of dental careers and have the opportunity to create a dental mold. Option to mold student teeth with permission slip, plaster mold if time allows (1-2hr)
Medical Assisting
Students will receive an overview of the scope of practice for a medical assistant and phlebotomist as well as education requirements. Students will practice skills such as taking vitals and charting basics.
Phlebotomy
Students will utilize venipuncture pads to practice blood draw techniques while learning asepsis techniques as well as how phlebotomy is part of many health careers.
